Our philosophy is to take extra special care of each and every amputee that visits us. We are committed to helping you achieve all your goals. Based on our experience, here are several important points for first time patients to consider:
First and foremost, you have to want to become independent and fully functional on your own again. The emotional response to becoming an amputee naturally varies from person to person. An individual's overall health and well-being before becoming an amputee is often directly related to his or her level of success and independence after becoming an amputee. We find that the type of attitude people have before becoming an amputee will heighten after their amputation. Accordingly, people who have positive attitudes before amputation will have the tools to better deal with these life-altering challenges. However, people who were negative or pessimistic before their amputation often find the challenges ahead of them frustrating and difficult, making their journey to a better, more independent life longer and more arduous. All that being said, our experience has also shown that people can change. Resolve and determination are powerful forces, and if you commit to being active in your recovery and regaining control of your life, you will become independent again.
A prosthetic device becomes a part of you, and you can use it to become independent and feel complete again. Often, a doctor will refer patients to their first prosthetist. It is important that patients feel comfortable with their prosthetist, and feel like they are receiving the utmost in care. With over 60 years of experience, we can relate to many different types of people in varying situations. The quality of your amputation surgery is extremely important. Having an amputation performed is a serious surgical event and should be done by an extremely experienced doctor. Just like any operation or reconstruction, this surgery can be done well or improperly, so you want the very best working for you. Make sure you seek out a skilled, knowledgeable surgeon who can perform the operation with careful consideration for the quality of life you would like after the healing is complete.
